KEY PRINCIPLES (10)
Focus on who follows you, not how many.
Platforms shove numbers in your face, making it hard to resist chasing vanity metrics. Instead, attract high-signal individuals—like Ferrari’s 13,000 customers being worth more than GM’s 2.5 million.
Why: One right follower can be worth 100 random ones; resisting the numbers trap is a competitive advantage because most creators won’t.
"Would you rather have 100,000 Americans picked at random from across the country, be chosen to read your book or have every member of Davos read your book and love your work?"
Make the product ‘you pushed out to the world’.
Package your unique tastes, experiences, opinions and delivery style—no one can compete with you at being you. Unleash your inner nerd about topics you’re obsessed with; the internet vaporizes geography so you’ll find your tribe.
Why: Creates a market of one, guarantees daily wins because you’re talking about what you love, and eliminates direct competition.
"The best product is just you pushed out to the world."
Build a magnet, not an audience.
Every post is a honeypot to attract like-minded people into your orbit, leading to deals, friendships and accelerated learning as people send you relevant opportunities.
Why: Transforms content from broadcast to relationship engine; the network effects compound faster than follower counts.
"I am building a magnet, a giant magnet that will attract like-minded people into my life."
Use the ‘first, last, best, worst, weirdest’ exercise to become idea-rich.
Apply the prompt to any life domain (jobs, relationships, projects) to surface 200+ personal stories only you can tell; circle the juiciest for content.
Why: Prevents idea drought and ensures authentic, differentiated material.
"That will create just this huge pipeline of personal stories that you can tell... you should be idea rich, time poor maybe, but idea rich."
Be known well, not just well-known.
Share the 5 Ds: Done (track record), Deliver (what you offer), Do (work & fun), Dreams (goals), Dork out (obsessions). This creates connection and serendipitous luck.
Why: Connection drives subscriptions, purchases and live attendance; being known well makes opportunities find you.
"I don't want to be well known. I want to be known well."
There’s no such thing as too long, only too boring.
If content is insightful, entertaining and novel, people will stay; length is irrelevant.
Why: Shifts focus from arbitrary limits to value density.
"There's no such thing as too long, only too boring."
A+ content with C- delivery beats C- content with A+ production.
Early podcast was bedroom + shitty headphones; Joe Rogan started with fuzzy webcam and rainbow background. Nail content first, then upgrade packaging.
Why: Content is the moat; production can be iterated later.
"The goal is not C minus content with A plus production, it's A plus content with C minus delivery."
Create a binge bank to stay motivated during the early low-view phase.
Ignore 8-view videos; instead build 1-2 hours of binge-worthy content so when someone discovers you they become a fan.
Why: Solves the chicken-and-egg problem of needing content before having an audience.
"I am building my binge bank... Create an hour or two of content that if somebody ever got there... they'll walk away being like, wow, I love this guy."
