ABOUT THIS BRAIN

Jonny Miller teaches tech professionals how to regulate their nervous system through breath, body awareness and emotional fluidity to reduce anxiety, avoid burnout and make better decisions.

KEY PRINCIPLES (12)

Interoception

Train your sixth sense of sensing internal states.

Track breath, posture, emotions and body sensations in real time to catch dysregulation early.

Why: Higher interoception correlates with better decision-making and earlier burnout prevention.

"interoception... our ability to sense, track and feel our internal landscape"

State over Story

Change your body state first; thoughts and feelings follow.

Instead of trying to calm yourself by reframing thoughts, use bottom-up physiology tools like breath to shift state, which then cascades into calmer thoughts.

Why: There are four times more afferent neurons carrying information from body to brain than from brain to body, making body-based interventions faster and more effective.

"state over story"

Feather-Brick-Dump-Truck

Notice early warning signs of burnout before they escalate.

Burnout starts with subtle cues (feather), then bigger disruptions (brick), and finally major crises (dump truck).

Why: Early intervention prevents cumulative emotional debt from becoming a health or career crisis.

"ideally, you want to notice when it's the feather and then make adjustments... not have to wait until you experience the full-blown pain of the dump truck"

Emotional Debt

Incomplete stress cycles accumulate as stored tension.

Unprocessed stress becomes allostatic load; signs include disproportionate reactivity, poor sleep, relationship friction.

Why: Stored stress creates fragility and eventually dysregulation or breakdown.

"emotional debt... if that cycle isn't completed... that gets stored in the body as allostatic load"

APE Check-In

Use Awareness, Posture, Emotion scan as a daily practice.

Quick 15-second scan: Where is awareness? How is posture? What emotions/sensations are present?

Why: Creates a habit of dropping out of heady reactivity into embodied presence.

"APE... Awareness, Posture and Emotion"

Breath Ratios

Exhale twice as long as inhale to downshift; reverse to energize.

4-4-8 or 3-3-6 breathing calms; rapid bellows-style exhale (espresso breath) activates.

Why: Long exhale stimulates vagus nerve and parasympathetic response; short sharp exhale triggers sympathetic activation.

"when the exhale is twice as long as the inhale, it has a calming effect... when the inhale is either more intense or twice as long as the exhale, it has an activating effect"

Humming & Nitric Oxide

Humming releases nitric oxide and tones the vagus nerve.

One round of nasal humming after breathing practices deepens calm and reduces eye tension.

Why: Nitric oxide is a vasodilator and vagal stimulator, enhancing parasympathetic tone.

"humming... releases nitric oxide, which is a vasodilator... it also tones or stimulates the vagus nerve"

NSDR (Non-Sleep Deep Rest)

15-20 min guided body scan equals a 2-hour nap.

Lie down, eye mask, audio guide; best between 1-3 pm for afternoon reset.

Why: Down-regulates cortisol, strengthens ventral vagal tone, improves interoception.

"NSDR... you feel like you've had a two-hour nap"
